A patient is ventilated under general anaesthesia with a tidal volume of 500 mL and a respiratory rate of 12/min. The inspiratory flow is increased while the tidal volume and respiratory rate remain unchanged. Which change is most likely to occur?

A. Increase in inspiratory time
B. Decrease in inspiratory time
C. Increase in expiratory time
D. Increase in tidal volume
E. Decrease in respiratory rate
Answer: B. Decrease in inspiratory time
With a fixed tidal volume, increasing inspiratory flow allows the required tidal volume to be delivered in a shorter time. Therefore inspiratory time decreases, leaving more time for expiration when the respiratory rate remains unchanged.
